Liberal Senator and Shadow Defence Minister James Paterson recently found himself in a confrontation with a One Nation volunteer while campaigning at a polling booth in the Farrer electorate. The altercation, captured by Paterson on his phone and by a bystander, unfolded after the two engaged in a heated exchange regarding One Nation candidate David Farley outside a polling location in Albury.

During their discussion, Paterson alleged that Farley had attempted to stand for the Labor Party in the past, sparking a defensive response from the volunteer who labeled the claim as defamatory. Tensions escalated when the volunteer, upon realising they were being filmed, attempted to snatch Paterson’s phone, leading to a further exchange of accusations. Paterson claimed that this action constituted assault, asserting, “You just grabbed my phone off me, that’s an assault.”

The situation drew attention from other bystanders, including fellow One Nation volunteers, who ultimately intervened to separate the two. In the aftermath of the incident, Farley took to Facebook to express his disapproval of the altercation and conveyed his commitment to maintaining respectful conduct during the electoral process. He stated, “I condemn in the strongest terms aggression of any form on the campaign trail,” reaffirming his dedication to an inclusive democratic engagement.

Following the confrontation, Paterson acknowledged that while vigorous debate is part and parcel of politics, such interactions should not become physical. He insisted that candidates must expect scrutiny regarding their political histories, emphasising that voters deserve transparency about Farley’s past affiliation with the Labor Party before making electoral decisions.

This incident occurred during the lead-up to a by-election for the Farrer seat, a contest that includes candidates from the Liberal Party, Nationals, One Nation, and independent Michelle Milthorpe. As the political landscape remains charged, both parties are mindful of the need for decorum amidst the spirited exchanges characteristic of electoral campaigns.
