On a chilly Saturday afternoon, President Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 19 distinguished individuals in the East Room of the White House. Among the honourees was former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, whose recognition prompted a standing ovation, attended by her family, including husband Bill, daughter Chelsea, and grandchildren. Others receiving this prestigious honour included philanthropist George Soros and actor Denzel Washington.
In his opening remarks, Biden expressed gratitude to the honourees, remarking, “Thank you for all you’ve done to help this country.” Four medals were awarded posthumously to notable figures, including Robert F. Kennedy, whose legacy was highlighted by Biden’s personal admiration.
The event celebrated contributions from various sectors, including sports, with the likes of Lionel Messi and Magic Johnson, to advocacy for social justice, represented by figures such as Bono and José Andrés. Fashion designer Ralph Lauren made history as the first in his field to receive this honour.
With only a few days left in his presidency, Biden reflected on his tenure by acknowledging the “extraordinary” impact of the recipients, who have significantly shaped American culture and values. The Medal of Freedom remains a revered distinction, awarded 654 times since its establishment, honouring individuals who have made a lasting mark on society.
