An early-morning collision between a fuel tanker and a vehicle on the Moonie Highway in the Kumbarilla area of Queensland’s Western Downs resulted in a significant petrol spill. The accident occurred around 4.30am, approximately 118km from Toowoomba, leading to the tanker overturning. Fortunately, both male occupants of the vehicle sustained only minor injuries, though one suffered a head injury while the other had an eye injury. They were subsequently transported to Dalby Hospital, where they are in stable condition.
The incident caused a major fuel spill on the roadway, prompting police to implement safety measures under the public safety preservation act. Officials confirmed that while some fuel types are still undetermined, diesel was involved. In response to the spill, an exclusion zone has been established, extending from Moonie Highway south to Kumbarilla Lane and north to Gulera Daandine Road, with a 500m buffer. Authorities anticipate that traffic diversions will be in effect for several hours. Residents in the vicinity have been advised to stay indoors and keep windows closed while ensuring respiratory medications are accessible. Additionally, drivers and the public are urged to avoid the affected area.
