Elouise and Danny Massa, a couple from Sydney, are advocating for a system that guarantees parents the right to be heard after suffering the tragic loss of their son, Joe, following multiple failings at Northern Beaches Hospital. They are proposing the introduction of “Joe’s Rule,” inspired by a similar initiative named Ryan’s Rule that originated in Queensland after the death of toddler Ryan Saunders due to a misdiagnosed condition.
The Massas believe that improved communication channels within the healthcare system are essential, as they felt unheard throughout their ordeal. They emphasise that parents often possess crucial insights about their children’s health. NSW’s Health Minister, Ryan Park, is reportedly considering a review of the visibility and accessibility of the existing REACH protocol to ensure parents are informed about their rights in emergency departments.
In response to the tragedy, the Massas have launched a website called Action for Joe, encouraging other families to share their experiences. They are also pushing for Northern Beaches Hospital to transition into public ownership. The hospital has indicated plans to enhance information access through QR codes in waiting areas, aiming to improve support for parents navigating their child’s healthcare. The couple’s call for change highlights the need for systemic improvements to prevent similar incidents in the future.
