A heartbroken father is making a public plea for assistance following the tragic discovery of his son, Mark Akers, who was found deceased by a highway in a rural New South Wales community. Mark, aged 44, began his journey from Brisbane to Melbourne on June 15, making stops in various towns including Goondiwindi, Boggabilla, and Forbes, before halting in Jerilderie. He was last seen refuelling at a service station on Southey Street around 2:30 am the next day.
His body was located off the Newell Highway, roughly 11 kilometres south of Jerilderie, at approximately 12:35 pm on June 17. Authorities suspect he sustained severe injuries due to being struck by a vehicle. As such, investigations are underway, with police treating his death as suspicious.
In a bid to gather more information, the police have released details regarding Mark’s car, a black 2021-model 200 series Toyota Landcruiser, notable for its pink stickers on the windscreen. They are particularly eager to hear from anyone who may have witnessed any unusual activity along the Newell Highway between Jerilderie and Finley during the early hours of June 16.
John Akers, Mark’s father, has expressed deep sorrow over his son’s passing, stating, “Mark was the kindest soul who would do anything for anyone and was sadly taken from us too soon.” He has emphasised the family’s desperate need for answers, stating, “We are devastated by his passing and miss Mark terribly. We need a swift resolution and peace for Mark.” John has urged the public to come forward with any information, no matter how minor it may seem, to assist police in their investigation.
Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to reach out to Finley Police or contact Crime Stoppers.
