A grandmother from Perth, Annie Melanie Lucas, has been extradited from the UK after allegedly embezzling over $1.6 million from a Port Kennedy company. Lucas, 62, faced 103 charges in court today, related to her time as a bookkeeper for the family business from 2007 to 2013. During this period, authorities claim she breached her position of trust by depositing business cheques and funds directly into her personal account.
Appearing at Perth Airport surrounded by police, Lucas presented as a typical returning traveller, but the gravity of the situation was evident. While she portrays a loving family image on social media, her legal troubles paint a starkly different picture.
The Western Australia police have reiterated their commitment to justice, stating that they will pursue cases, regardless of the time or location involved. Lucas made a brief court appearance today, leaving family members expressing their support from the back of the room. She is scheduled to return to court on Monday, where she is expected to seek bail.
