A doctor from Hawaii, Gerhardt Konig, has pleaded not guilty to attempting to murder his wife during a hike in Honolulu last month. His wife alleges that he threatened her life by pushing her towards a cliff’s edge, attempting to inject her with a syringe, and hitting her with a rock, as detailed in a petition for a temporary restraining order. Following the incident, Konig has been held without bail since his indictment on March 28.

During a recent court appearance via video link from the Oahu Community Correctional Center, Konig’s attorney, Thomas Otake, indicated plans to file for bail, noting that his client has no prior criminal history. Otake emphasised that Konig’s plea was a meaningful response rather than a mere formality, suggesting that the legal process would reveal both sides of the story.

If found guilty, Konig could face a life sentence. The couple, who were on holiday celebrating the wife’s birthday while their two sons remained in Maui, had previously sought therapy due to relationship issues, including accusations of infidelity from Konig’s side.

On March 24, while on a trail known for its dangerous conditions, the couple’s hike took a violent turn. Konig’s wife stated that she expressed discomfort during the hike and asked to turn back. However, he reportedly grabbed her and aggressively moved her towards the cliff. As they struggled, he allegedly produced a syringe, the contents of which she feared could be lethal given his profession as an anesthesiologist.

Witnesses reported the confrontation, with two women assisting Konig’s wife and calling for help. The altercation resulted in her sustaining significant injuries, prompting an emergency response, while Konig fled the scene, which led to the closure of the park as police initiated a search. He was arrested later that day.

Konig, employed as an anesthesiologist with Maui Health—even though his employment status has been clarified as through an independent contractor for Kaiser Permanente—has been suspended from his duties pending an investigation into the allegations. The case continues to unfold as the legal process progresses, with a judge ordering Konig to remain away from both his wife and children. This incident has raised concerns about safety and trust given his medical profession.
