The mother of a Gold Coast toddler, who was recently put in an induced coma after inhaling cake decorating dust, has shared a positive update on her son’s recovery. Katie Robinson spoke to the Today Show outside Queensland Children’s Hospital, revealing that her son, Dusty Wildman, has shown signs of improvement after several days in the coma. “He’s improved a little bit, which has been such a relief for all of us,” she stated, expressing hope that the medical team would remove his breathing tube later in the day.

The incident occurred while Robinson was preparing a Bluey-themed cake for Dusty’s first birthday. During the baking process, Dusty discovered a canister of shiny decorating dust and accidentally inhaled it, leading to severe coughing and rapid respiratory distress. After being rushed to the hospital, Robinson learned that the dust contained harmful ingredients such as copper, which can accumulate in the lungs and is not water-soluble in blood.

The label on the decorating dust indicated it was non-toxic and meant for use on inedible items, yet it lacked a comprehensive ingredient list. Thus, doctors had to send the product to a lab to ascertain its contents, which alarms Robinson, prompting her to advocate for improved regulations on cake decorating supplies to ensure products with potential dangers are not sold alongside edible items.

“I can’t believe these products are available alongside edible options. It’s just not right,” she commented, reiterating her call for regulatory changes. As the family awaits further updates on Dusty’s condition, Robinson highlighted her son’s resilience, noting that he has been fighting hard and is eager to have the breathing tube removed.

The supplier of the harmful decorating dust has since removed the product from shelves and contacted all retailers to mitigate any further risks to children. Dusty’s fighting spirit has given his family a glimmer of hope during this challenging time, and they remain optimistic about his recovery.
