James admitted guilt for the heinous crimes, which occurred after a night filled with heavy drinking and drug use. He had consumed a significant amount of alcohol, including beer and gin, and used LSD before he returned to the home where the victims were staying. Records indicate that he raped and strangled Neuner and fatally stabbed Dick before fleeing the scene with stolen property, including a vehicle. He was apprehended weeks later in California.
During the execution proceedings, James opted not to make a final statement. Eyewitnesses noted his breathing became laboured as the drugs took effect. Following the execution, Jared Pearson, the brother of the young victim, expressed that the family found some degree of closure, although they acknowledged the deep and lasting impact of the tragedy on their lives.
James’ execution was part of a series of lethal injections conducted in the United States this week, with the Supreme Court dismissing his last-minute appeals for stay on the grounds of his mental competency and previous health issues, including a heart attack.
