Queensland is bracing for more rainfall as flood alerts spread across an extensive area of over 3000 kilometres. The Bureau of Meteorology’s senior meteorologist, Angus Hines, has indicated that the remnants of ex-tropical cyclone Dianne are expected to produce additional rainfall of 50mm or more in the coming days.

Hines highlighted the ongoing severity of flooding, particularly affecting central and western Queensland, specifying that these conditions will likely persist for days or even weeks. In eastern Queensland, while the Mary and Noosa rivers are currently flooding, there are signs that high waters are beginning to recede. Recent rainfall in the region, although tapering off, still recorded impressive totals of 50mm to 80mm from the Sunshine Coast to Noosa.

Despite the challenging weather conditions, Hines noted a silver lining: Dianne is moving relatively quickly, and it should traverse Queensland from west to east within a day after its arrival later today. However, residents should be prepared for damaging wind gusts associated with the cyclone’s remnants. With the ground already saturated, any additional rainfall is likely to flow directly into rivers, exacerbating the situation.

Western and Central Queensland should anticipate river levels to remain elevated above normal for an extended period, compounding the risk of prolonged flooding. As the state continues to deal with the aftermath of significant rain and flooding, local authorities and communities are remaining vigilant to manage the evolving situation.
