Tom De Koning, the Carlton ruckman, is currently deliberating a significant seven-year contract offer from St Kilda worth $12.5 million, which could have widespread implications within the AFL, according to reports from Nine’s Tom Morris. As one of the most sought-after free agents this season, De Koning’s choice is likely to create a ripple effect across several clubs.

At just 25 years of age, De Koning is also contemplating a six-year deal to remain with Carlton; however, this offer is reportedly $5 million less than what Fremantle has on the table. Morris noted that as time passes, the likelihood of De Koning leaving Carlton increases.

Should he decide to join St Kilda, the impact will be felt across five teams. Rowan Marshall, who is already under contract with the Saints, aspires to solidify his position as their leading ruckman but could find his role threatened by De Koning’s arrival. Marshall is tied to St Kilda with a lucrative five-year contract that extends until the end of 2027.

If De Koning accepts the offer from St Kilda, Marshall might draw interest from clubs like the Geelong Cats or Adelaide Crows. An influx of interest could see Reilly O’Brien from Adelaide made available, which would then prompt Geelong to potentially pursue Fremantle ruckman Sean Darcy.

From Carlton’s perspective, they could seize the opportunity to sign either O’Brien or Darcy to compensate for De Koning’s departure, while also potentially netting an additional $2 million next season through a front-loaded contract arrangement for De Koning.

This isn’t De Koning’s first experience with contract negotiations at Carlton; he previously faced similar circumstances in 2023 but opted to stay with the club despite overtures from rival teams. As discussions continue, the future of several players could hinge on De Koning’s next move, igniting considerable speculation as the end of the season approaches.
