The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is seeking confirmation regarding the detention of Australian citizens by Israeli authorities following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). Officials based in Tel Aviv are coordinating with local authorities and have formally requested early consular access for any Australians involved.

A DFAT spokesperson stressed Australia’s call for all parties to uphold international law and ensure the safe and humane treatment of detained individuals. They acknowledged the desire of many individuals to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza but reiterated warnings against breaching the naval blockade due to the associated risks. Furthermore, Australia urged Israel to facilitate a sustained and unhindered flow of humanitarian assistance into the region.

Reports indicate that six Australians were part of the flotilla—an initiative involving around 500 international activists, including prominent figures like climate activist Greta Thunberg, aiming to bring aid supplies to Gaza. The Australian detainees have been identified as Surya McEwen, Abubakir Rafiq, Hamish Paterson, Juliet Lamont, Bianca Webb-Pullman, and Dan Coward. Independent Senator Fatima Payman expressed her deep concern regarding their apprehension, urging the government to ensure their humane treatment.

The Maritime Union of Australia has confirmed that one of the detained Australians, Hamish Paterson, is a union member. National Secretary Paddy Crumlin called on the Australian government to secure immediate consular assistance for him and the other detained individuals. He described the flotilla’s mission as peaceful, comprising trade unionists and humanitarian workers providing essential aid to Gaza, and labelled their detention as a breach of fundamental human rights and international law, underscoring the principle of non-violence as its core tenet.

This incident highlights the complex interplay of humanitarian efforts amidst political tensions, drawing international attention to the plight of those in Gaza and the rights of those advocating for their help.
