Prime Minister Anthony Albanese participated in an international meeting aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and exploring possibilities for a ceasefire agreement. During this gathering, convened by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, leaders collectively urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire after three years of war.

In a statement, Albanese expressed Australia’s willingness to consider any requests for support concerning future peacekeeping efforts, highlighting the nation’s commitment to achieving a just and sustainable peace for Ukraine. He reaffirmed that Australia is always ready to evaluate new initiatives that assist Ukraine, reflecting on the country’s capacity and strengths.

Accompanied by key leaders from Europe, Canada, New Zealand, NATO, and the European Union, the meeting followed a US-backed proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has endorsed. Though Putin has shown a willingness to discuss a truce, he has outlined many conditions that must be resolved before a ceasefire can be finalised.

In his remarks, Albanese reiterated Australia’s unwavering support for Ukraine, stating that the country would continue to stand with Ukraine “for as long as it takes.” He emphasised the battle for Ukraine as a defence of international law against what he described as Russia’s imperialist ambitions. He affirmed that Australia supports any genuine efforts towards a fair and lasting peace but recognised the necessity of applying pressure on Russia to engage earnestly in negotiations.

Since the onset of the conflict, Australia has committed $1.5 billion in aid to Ukraine, predominantly in the form of military support through equipment and training. The recent meeting aimed to bolster Ukraine’s position amid a shift in US policy with potential implications following the return of President Donald Trump.

Starmer highlighted the need for collective resolve and reiterated that allies are prepared to deploy troops to ensure peace following any ceasefire agreements. The conference featured discussions on enhancing Ukraine’s defence capabilities with contributions from its allies, including potential military involvement by nations like the UK and France.

After the meeting, Zelenskyy urged for increased sanctions on Russia to pressure it into accepting a ceasefire that ensures viable conditions for a peace deal. He stressed that any future security arrangements in Ukraine are to be determined by Ukraine itself, not by Putin, asserting that Moscow must adhere to a peace agreement that respects Ukraine’s autonomy.

As the situation develops, with Russian forces gaining momentum, the international community remains watchful, urging meaningful dialogue to resolve the conflict.
