Brandon Smith is poised to leave the Sydney Roosters sooner than expected, with reports indicating he could join the South Sydney Rabbitohs as early as this week. This move comes despite Smith already signing a deal with the Rabbitohs for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. His departure signals the end of a challenging period with the Roosters, who currently find themselves in 11th place on the NRL ladder with only four wins out of nine matches.

Throughout the season, the Roosters have faced significant player losses, including key figures such as Luke Keary, Joseph Suaalii, Joey Manu, and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves. Furthermore, both Smith and halfback Sam Walker sustained severe knee injuries late last year, leaving the team to rely on inexperienced players while still managing to secure victories against strong rivals like Penrith and Brisbane.

Phil Gould, a notable figure in the rugby league community, expressed his bewilderment regarding Smith’s early release, highlighting that his presence could have bolstered the Roosters’ chances of reaching the finals, especially with Walker’s anticipated return. Gould suggested that while Smith demonstrates defensive strength and formidable ball-running capabilities, he may not possess the full range of skills desired for a dedicated hooker role.

In addition to the changing dynamics surrounding Smith, reports emerged that winger Dom Young has also been informed that he can exit the Roosters immediately. Smith’s contract with the Roosters is reportedly valued at around $850,000, and it appears the Rabbitohs will cover a portion of his salary for the remainder of the season.

The 28-year-old Smith has had a rocky journey with the Roosters, especially after missing a crucial team meeting last year, which resulted in disciplinary action. Matters deteriorated further when he suffered an ACL injury later in the season, preventing him from contributing on the field since. In March, it was publicly confirmed that Smith would transition to the Rabbitohs on a two-year contract worth $600,000 per season, a move that has now been expedited due to the Roosters’ current roster reshuffle.

With South Sydney grappling with its own injury-related challenges, Smith’s integration into the team could be vital as soon as he recovers from his knee injury. As the situation evolves, it will be interesting to see how both clubs navigate this significant player transition.
