Canterbury Bulldogs have officially removed themselves from the competition to sign Daly Cherry-Evans, as confirmed by their general manager of football, Phil Gould. The 36-year-old halfback sparked speculation about a potential move to Belmore following his unexpected announcement earlier this week, but Gould has clarified that the Bulldogs will not pursue him.
“I hold Daly Cherry-Evans in high regard as a person and a player,” Gould stated in an interview with 9News Sydney. He expressed admiration for Cherry-Evans’ contributions to the game throughout his career but firmly stated that the player will not be joining the Bulldogs.
Earlier this week, Gould participated in the 100% Footy panel during which Cherry-Evans revealed his contract situation, and while he did not dismiss the possibility then, he has since made it clear that Canterbury has no intention of signing the Sea Eagles captain. The club has a variety of options for future playmakers and has decided to stick with their current squad under Cameron Ciraldo’s strategy.
Toby Sexton, who is yet to secure a contract beyond the current season, has shown significant improvement, while promising young talent Mitch Woods remains committed to the Bulldogs for the long term.
In related developments, both South Sydney and Brisbane have also stated they will not pursue Cherry-Evans, leaving the door open for other clubs. Notably, Roosters coach Trent Robinson has indicated that his team would be interested in acquiring the experienced halfback.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen where Cherry-Evans will play next, but for now, Canterbury has made their position clear.
