Former NSW State of Origin star Benny Elias has described the media silence surrounding Latrell Mitchell and Spencer Leniu as detrimental to the game and urged the NRL to remind players of their obligations. Speaking to Wide World of Sports following his induction into the NSWRL Hall of Fame, Elias recognised that the players may have valid reasons for their reticence but stressed the importance of engaging with fans and the media.

Despite a media release from the NSWRL stating that the full squad would be available for interviews, both Mitchell and Leniu did not participate, leading Blues coach Laurie Daley to suggest that the duo would likely avoid media discussions during the Origin I camp in order to not exacerbate existing tensions.

Elias expressed disappointment over their lack of interaction, highlighting that players owe it to the supporters who contribute to the State of Origin’s vibrant atmosphere. He stated, “They have an obligation… This is our showpiece game to the world, and if you take that colour feature away from State of Origin, it’s the start of the finish.” Elias echoed the concerns of former coach Phil Gould, asserting that athletes should not be allowed to impose media bans given their contractual responsibilities.

He noted the cultural and economic significance of the players’ involvement in the media, particularly for those fans from diverse backgrounds, including hard-hit communities who look forward to the pre-match excitement. According to Elias, the NRL needs to educate its players on how media interaction impacts the game, emphasising its role in fostering enthusiasm and connectivity with fans.

The context of the media freeze may partly arise from Leniu’s recent controversies, including a clash with Queensland legend Johnathan Thurston, and remarks made in light of Leniu’s eight-game suspension for racial vilification. Meanwhile, Mitchell has faced scrutiny due to various off-field incidents, including a recent infamous radio interview and a controversial photo, resulting in a record number of sin bins in the NRL era.

As speculation swirls regarding their silence, with some suggesting mental health concerns, Elias called for the NRL to seek clarity from the players on their rationale. He highlighted the importance of media engagement as part of the theatrical buildup to the competition, reinforcing that it’s not merely about the match itself but the entire experience surrounding it.

Elias concluded that for the health of the game, both players need to understand their responsibilities in this context, framing it as vital for community connection and the sport’s broader success.
