Mental health issues will be a key focus in the case against Kathleen Joyce Heggs, a 66-year-old woman charged with the domestic violence murders of her two grandsons, Max and Sam Johnson, who were aged seven and six. The tragic incident occurred in their home in rural Coonabarabran, NSW, where the boys were discovered deceased on May 5.

Following the boys’ deaths, Heggs sustained injuries to herself and was taken into custody, later receiving treatment at a mental health facility in Orange. During a brief court appearance at Dubbo Local Court, she did not need to appear in person, with her legal representation confirmed by solicitor Christopher Ford, who emphasised that the case would revolve around Heggs’ mental state at the time of the alleged offences.

The police have confirmed that no weapons were involved in the case. Initially triggered by a message sent to local authorities, officers conducted a welfare check at Heggs’ residence and found the children in their bedrooms. Their deaths have sent shockwaves through the Coonabarabran community, where the boys were active students and participants in local activities, including karate.

A candlelight vigil was held in their memory, with community members planting trees and showcasing the karate belts the brothers were set to receive. A local councillor poignantly described the boys as “wild as March hares, full of spark and flame,” reflecting the impact their loss has had on residents.

Heggs’ legal proceedings will continue, with her next court date scheduled for July 10. The case highlights the profound effects of mental health issues within families, raising questions about the support systems available to those in need. For anyone requiring assistance, support services such as Lifeline and beyondblue are accessible resources.
