The Dolphins’ dismal start to the season, with three losses under their belt, has reignited discussions around a so-called “Wayne Bennett curse” affecting the new NRL club. This trend poses significant challenges for coach Kristian Woolf, as historical patterns show that coaches succeeding Bennett have typically faced short tenures. Over the last 20 years, five coaches who succeeded Bennett—Ivan Henjak, Steve Price, Rick Stone, Anthony Seibold, and Jason Demetriou—were all dismissed relatively quickly.

Woolf’s time under Bennett contrasts with the success Bennett achieved at other clubs, having led teams like Brisbane, the Dragons, and South Sydney to premierships. Unfortunately, Woolf’s tenure has not mirrored this success, with the Dolphins finishing 13th in their inaugural season and 10th last year, despite a commendable position in the top four mid-season.

Former players and experts have pointed out the unique challenges faced by those who take over after Bennett. Darren Lockyer emphasised that while Woolf and other successors might possess the requisite coaching skills, replicating Bennett’s successful approach is difficult. He urged the club to provide Woolf with time to implement his vision.

Wally Lewis also weighed in on the situation, suggesting that the notion of a curse is unlikely to change perceptions. He noted that while some may believe in the curse, others attribute the Dolphins’ struggles to a lack of adequately skilled players. Lewis praised Bennett’s knack for effective team management and adaptability, underscoring his extensive experience and understanding of what it takes to achieve consistent performance.

Bennett, who endorsed Woolf’s appointment as an assistant coach in 2022, expressed his confidence in Woolf’s capabilities. He asserted that a deep understanding of Queensland is essential for coaching the Dolphins, mentioning that local talent is indispensable for success. Bennett described Woolf’s character and tenacity, asserting that his roots from Mt. Isa signify a toughness necessary for the role.

In conclusion, while the Dolphins grapple with a tough start and the implications of Bennett’s legacy, Woolf’s ability to carve out his own identity and strategy as head coach will be crucial for the club’s future success. The pressure is on to dispel the shadows of past coaches and to usher in a new era for the Dolphins.
