Darren Lockyer, a director at the Brisbane Broncos, has highlighted the importance of Adam Reynolds’ physical condition in relation to the prospect of extending the veteran halfback’s contract beyond the 2026 season. Currently unsigned for next year, Reynolds has expressed a desire to continue playing, potentially for an additional two years. Despite his preference to remain with the Broncos, at least two rival Sydney clubs are reportedly keeping an eye on his contract situation.
Reynolds has a history of injuries, particularly a chronic knee issue that led to his departure from the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2021. In his three seasons with the Broncos, he has featured in 56 out of 81 games, playing a crucial role in guiding the team to the 2023 grand final, where they narrowly missed out on the title.
As the competition heats up—especially with Ezra Mam facing suspension and Ben Hunt confirmed for the upcoming season—important decisions looms for the Broncos regarding their playmaker roster. If Reynolds stays, a pay cut may be proposed to accommodate the team’s salary cap. Should he sign an extension, it would mark a significant period beyond his 36th birthday, similar to when club legend Allan Langer hung up his boots in 2002.
Lockyer emphasised that Reynolds’ ability to remain fit is critical for any future arrangements. He acknowledged the complexity of the situation, mentioning that the return of Mam and Hunt’s role will influence the Broncos’ strategic decisions. Ezra Mam could gain valuable experience watching both incumbent players this season.
Reynolds managed to score 11 points in a recent match against the North Queensland Cowboys, surpassing NRL great Jarrod Croker’s scoring record. He is now on track to challenge Bulldogs’ legend Hazem El Masri for the second spot on the all-time points leaderboard, with only 43 points separating them, while NRL Hall of Famer Cameron Smith remains at the top with 2786 points.
When asked about his future with the Broncos, Reynolds remained optimistic but non-committal, suggesting that the situation will resolve itself in due course. He expressed satisfaction with his current team and the coaching staff, stating that as long as he enjoys playing, his future will take care of itself.
Overall, Reynolds’ fitness will play a pivotal role in defining both his and the Broncos’ future strategies as they navigate the upcoming season and beyond.
