Brisbane rugby league icon Darren Lockyer has advised suspended player Ezra Mam to observe his older teammates closely during his nine-game ban. Mam, who has been fined $120,000 and suspended for driving under the influence and without a license, will not be eligible to play until round 10.

The 22-year-old was gearing up for success after nearly winning the Clive Churchill Medal in the previous year’s grand final. However, his form declined, leading to missed finals, the dismissal of his coach, and narrowly avoiding imprisonment. Mam had previously signed a lucrative five-year contract extension worth $4 million.

As the team adjusts, veteran Ben Hunt has joined the Broncos and, along with Adam Reynolds, recently led the team to a serious victory over the Roosters with a score of 50-14, signalling a strong start under new coach Michael Maguire. There may be competition for positions, particularly at hooker, with several players vying for key spots in the team.

Lockyer remarked on the uncertainty regarding Mam’s return, cautioning that it is premature to speculate on his future with the team. He encouraged Mam to focus on his rehabilitation and learn from the team’s current dynamics. While Mam’s suspension prohibits him from playing at any level, he is still allowed to train with the squad.

Lockyer pointed out that when Mam returns, he may have to step back into first-grade rugby without the benefit of match fitness, depending on his physical condition and the team’s needs. He noted the successful combination displayed by Hunt and Reynolds, emphasising the essential role each player plays in executing team strategies effectively.

As the Broncos prepare for their upcoming match against the Raiders, Lockyer highlighted the importance of maintaining humility and consistency following their impressive performance against the Roosters. The team aims to build on this momentum as they continue their season.
