Canterbury Bulldogs have announced their separation from former teenage star Karl Oloapu. The 20-year-old, who previously expressed a desire to leave the Bulldogs for the Dolphins, has had a challenging journey since his signing with Brisbane Broncos at age 13. He captained the Australian Schoolboys in 2022 but faced significant setbacks following a serious neck injury that required surgery, derailing his 2024 season and casting uncertainty over his future in the sport.
Bulldogs’ chief Phil Gould acknowledged the difficulties Oloapu and his family have endured during this period, highlighting their commitment to supporting him throughout his recovery. While expressing disappointment that Oloapu’s time with the club did not meet expectations, Gould placed importance on the player’s well-being and future prospects.
Originally from New Zealand with Samoan heritage, Oloapu’s tenure with the Broncos was short-lived. After signing a three-year NRL contract, he abruptly sought a release from the club just ten months later, claiming Brisbane had not upheld their promises—a sentiment he expressed emphatically through his manager. The Broncos imposed a hefty transfer fee of $500,000, but soon, in January 2023, the Bulldogs secured his services.
Oloapu’s talent was evident as he was included in Queensland’s emerging Origin squad and made his NRL debut at 18. Despite the promise shown early in his career, the combination of injuries and challenges in his professional relationships has led him to seek new opportunities as he embarks on the next chapter of his career. The club has wished him well in his future endeavours following their split.
