Emerging cricketer Jake Weatherald is making headlines with a significant return to South Australia following his recent Cricket Australia contract. The 31-year-old left-handed batter is set to rejoin South Australia ahead of the upcoming domestic season, after a fruitful stint in Tasmania over the past three years.

Having debuted for South Australia in 2015, Weatherald built a strong career there over eight seasons before moving to Tasmania. Despite having two seasons left on his contract with Tasmania, he has been granted a release, allowing him to relocate to Adelaide. Notably, Weatherald’s wife has remained in South Australia for the last three years while he resided predominantly in Hobart during the cricket season.

His new contract with Cricket Australia appears to facilitate his return, as these contracts are not counted against state salary caps. This strategic move will reunite him with Test teammate Travis Head, enhancing a South Australian team that has claimed the previous two Sheffield Shield titles.

Weatherald has recently showcased his exceptional talent, notably scoring 906 runs at an impressive average of 50.33 during the 2024-25 season with Tasmania, which culminated in his Test debut against England in the Ashes series. His consistent performance has made a strong case for his selection in domestic and international fixtures.

In addition to his success in Australia, Weatherald’s form is also being recognised in England’s County cricket, where he recently scored 104 runs for Leicestershire. This follows previous innings of 83, 31, and 96, highlighting his continuing prowess with the bat.

Looking forward, uncertainty remains regarding the exact number of matches Weatherald will play for South Australia next season, especially with Australia’s busy Test schedule featuring 13 matches lined up during the domestic season. However, his return is anticipated to strengthen the team significantly.
