Employers are increasingly vigilant regarding the use of cocaine in Australian workplaces, as recent data indicates a nearly doubling of detections of this illicit substance throughout the year. According to the country’s leading drug testing agency, there was a staggering 45 per cent rise in positive tests for cocaine in the first quarter ending March 31. This trend highlights a concerning increase, especially as cocaine detection rates remain elevated post-holiday periods.

Overall, the data shows a year-on-year increase in cocaine use across nearly all states, with South Australia experiencing the most significant surge, at 128.2 per cent. Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria also reported notable increases. In contrast, Western Australia did not exhibit similar trends. The figures stem from various testing methods, including pre-employment, post-incident, regular, and random testing in workplaces.

Furthermore, the use of amphetamines, such as methamphetamine, rose by 28.3 per cent, prompting calls for employers to intensify their efforts to combat drug use in the workplace. Glenn Dobson, the chief executive of the drug testing agency, emphasised the urgency of implementing or updating drug testing programmes to ensure workplace safety and effectiveness. He noted that proactive measures, including regular testing, play a crucial role in identifying and mitigating substance abuse issues.

The hidden dangers of cocaine use in professional settings are particularly alarming, as it is often associated with high-performing employees in leadership roles who may appear confident and effective, while their judgement and impulse control may be severely impacted. This presents significant risks, particularly in environments where individuals operate heavy machinery or engage in safety-sensitive tasks, resulting not only in personal peril but also in hazards for colleagues.

Dobson cautioned that by the time drug use becomes evident, it might have already posed risks for an extended period. Therefore, fostering a robust testing culture is essential for early intervention and maintaining overall workplace safety.

For individuals struggling with substance dependence or for their loved ones seeking support, resources are available, including the National Alcohol and Other Drug hotline at 1800 250 015. This issue underlines the importance of addressing drug use in workplaces to safeguard employees and uphold a healthy work environment.
