The Dolphins are facing challenges ahead of their opening round match against the Rabbitohs due to the impending threat of Cyclone Alfred. Due to weather-related concerns, the team’s return home has been postponed, necessitating a stay in Sydney after the game. The NRL arranged a charter flight for the Dolphins to ensure they can return home safely, but they will not benefit from a police escort to the airport, unlike the Broncos.
The decision to remain in Sydney was made because the Dolphins would not be able to make it to the airport before curfew after their match at CommBank Stadium in Parramatta. Major airlines have announced they will halt services to and from Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Ballina airports until at least Sunday, complicating travel plans further.
Originally, the match between the Dolphins and Rabbitohs was slated to take place in Queensland. However, rising concerns about the weather led to its relocation. Despite these obstacles, Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf expressed pride in how his team has responded to the situation. He noted the considerable pressure they are under, with many players concerned about their homes and families, but commended the spirit and focus they have maintained.
The Dolphins are expected to return to Toowoomba via the charter flight on Saturday morning to prepare for the cyclone. Woolf’s comments highlighted the resilience and determination of the players, emphasising their commitment to complete the task at hand despite the challenges they faced leading up to the game.
