Tropical Cyclone Zelia made landfall near De Grey River, approximately 54 kilometres northeast of Port Hedland, as a category 4 storm with significant winds. By the afternoon, it had weakened to a category 3 storm but was still generating strong gusts up to 205 km/h and heavy rainfall. Residents in the region are bracing for severe conditions, with anticipated rainfall of 150 to 300 mm, possibly leading to flash flooding. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued flood warnings for several catchments, advising communities to remain vigilant.
Emergency services are preparing for clean-up operations, with reports of minor damages already noted. Authorities are mobilising resources, including SAS volunteers for debris removal. Despite Zelia’s weakening, it continues to draw in moisture, posing risks for extensive rainfall and flooding over the coming days.
Officials have stressed the importance of staying indoors until conditions improve, as post-cyclone hazards, such as fallen power lines and debris, can be just as dangerous as the cyclone itself. The local community, known for its resilience, is encouraged to remain cautious and follow safety advisories.
