On Monday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reaffirmed that Greenland is not for sale, responding to US President Donald Trump’s threats regarding the territory. Speaking in Brussels amid EU defence discussions, she called for a united European response if the US imposes harsh conditions on Europe. She emphasised that while Denmark respects allied relationships, collective solidarity is essential if sovereignty is challenged.

Greenland, an autonomous territory that hosts a significant US military base, is integral to Denmark’s national integrity. Frederiksen acknowledged the rising security concerns in the Arctic region, driven by increased Russian and Chinese activity, and stated that both Denmark and the US could enhance their security presence in Greenland.

Frederiksen secured support from EU partners to bolster the region’s defence capabilities, highlighted by a recent 14.6 billion kroner (approximately AUD 3.25 billion) investment aimed at improving surveillance and territorial sovereignty. This agreement includes acquiring new naval vessels and surveillance technology.

As EU leaders continued their summit focusing on military cooperation and defence spending, the uncertainty surrounding Trump’s strategies in relation to Ukraine loomed large, with EU officials preparing for potential trade conflicts that could benefit adversaries like China.
