Cameron Ciraldo, coach of the Bulldogs, has expressed his discontent regarding the 18th-man rule in the State of Origin series, especially with Maroons debutant Kurt Mann unable to play at the club level in round 12. This marks the second time Mann has been included in the Queensland squad, having previously been appointed as a reserve in 2021, yet he has yet to make his debut.

Mann has been named as the Maroons’ 18th man for the first game scheduled next Wednesday. Under current rules, the 18th man can only be activated if two players are forced off due to significant injuries. Unlike other reserve players who can return to their clubs, the 18th man must remain in camp, meaning Mann and his NSW counterpart Campbell Graham will be in limbo regarding their potential participation.

Ciraldo’s frustration stems from his team playing against the Dolphins on Thursday, leaving little time before the Origin match. He underscores the importance of players like Mann being part of the elite experience, despite the inconveniences faced by the club. “We would never begrudge him of that, but it is quite frustrating to lose a player to 18th man,” Ciraldo remarked.

This isn’t the first time Ciraldo has encountered such a situation. Previously, star five-eighth Matt Burton also sat out due to the same protocol regarding the 18th man. Ciraldo, however, remains optimistic about the positive influence of the Queensland camp on Mann’s development as a player.

Though he hasn’t sought to have Mann released for club duties, Ciraldo hopes the experience will enhance Mann’s skills and confidence upon his return. “We are just really grateful that he is there. I hope he has a great week and comes back a better player for us,” he commented.

Ciraldo also reflects on Mann’s impressive character, highlighting how his inclusion at 32 years old reflects his perseverance and experience, which significantly influences younger players within the Bulldogs’ squad. He hopes Mann may get an opportunity to play during the long series ahead, expressing enthusiasm for the experience he brings to the team.

In conclusion, while Ciraldo acknowledges the challenges posed by the 18th-man rule, he simultaneously respects Mann’s hard work and potential contributions to the Queensland team. His emphasis on development and experience shows his commitment to nurturing talent within his own club, even amidst the complexities of representative duties.
