Craig Fitzgibbon has addressed the “strange” criticism aimed at Nicho Hynes following Cronulla’s impressive 36-12 victory over the Cowboys in Round 2. Hynes delivered a standout performance, contributing three linebreak assists and covering 120 metres, along with successfully converting four tries.

Despite Hynes’s strong showing, questions about his performance emerged during the post-match press conference. Fitzgibbon defended Hynes, noting that he had played well even in the previous week’s loss to the Panthers, especially in the closing stages where he orchestrated crucial plays. He highlighted that Hynes’s ability to call plays and execute strategic moves was pivotal, stating, “It’s getting a bit weird all of that [criticism].”

The coach acknowledged that while Hynes and his teammates are still improving their on-field chemistry, they have shown significant promise, particularly in their latest match. Fitzgibbon expressed satisfaction with the team’s development, though he recognised they still had areas to work on.

Prior to the season, Cronulla was regarded as a strong contender for the premiership, and despite facing challenges, including a wave of illnesses after their Las Vegas trip, they demonstrated their potential in both matches so far. Fitzgibbon praised the team’s resilience, especially after dealing with the effects of COVID and influenza among several players, which hampered their preparation.

In addition to celebrating Hynes’s contributions, Fitzgibbon also marked a milestone: Siosifa Talakai’s 100th career game, alongside the awarding of the Paul Green Medal to Sharks skipper Cameron McInnes, paying tribute to the late player and coach who connected both clubs.

Overall, Fitzgibbon’s remarks highlighted a commitment to growth and improvement as the season progresses, framing Hynes as an integral part of the team, despite the outside noise of criticism.
