AFL legend Brendan Fevola has urged for greater support for players transitioning into life after football, following the tragic deaths of his close friend Troy Selwood and former teammate Adam Hunter. Selwood passed away at 40, while Hunter, a star during the Eagles’ 2006 premiership, was found dead at 43. Both deaths have not been deemed suspicious by authorities and have sent shockwaves through the AFL community.

Fevola, who has faced his own mental health struggles, shared on his radio show that he felt pressured to hide his feelings due to his status as a successful player. “I was embarrassed and worried about what others might think,” he admitted, highlighting a stigma around men’s mental health. He believes the AFL needs to take more proactive measures to assist players in preparing for life beyond football, advocating for the introduction of a dedicated mental health round to foster dialogue not only within the sport but also among broader audiences, including young tradespeople.

He emphasised the abruptness of the transition, saying, “When you finish, if you haven’t planned for what’s next, it’s a shock.” Fevola’s call to action stresses the importance of mental health awareness and support systems for men in the sporting community and beyond.
