Aussie Boxer Justis Huni Caught Up in ‘Petty’ Legal Dispute Following Blockbuster Netflix Fight

Australian heavyweight boxing sensation Justis Huni has found himself embroiled in a promotional dispute following his successful return to the ring last weekend. After a ten-month hiatus, Huni faced Frazer Clarke on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s victory over Arslanbek Makhmudov, securing a majority decision win. This match marked Huni’s first appearance since his world title defeat to Fabio Wardley last June.

Despite Huni’s impressive performance, the situation off the canvas is far from straightforward. Veteran boxing journalist Dan Rafael reports that Matchroom Boxing, helmed by Eddie Hearn, has sent a legal notice to Goldstar Promotions and Tasman Fighters, asserting that Huni remains bound by an exclusive contract with them. The letter claims that Huni is still in the midst of a six-fight agreement and labels his participation in the Netflix card as “tortious interference,” claiming they were not notified about the Clarke fight.

Matchroom has reportedly attempted to resolve the matter and proposed an amendment allowing Huni to fight under certain conditions. However, they have yet to receive a response from the competing promoters. Goldstar’s Spencer Brown expressed hope for a resolution, branding the situation as “very silly and very petty.”

As it stands, no resolution to the conflict has been reached. Huni, with a record of 13 wins and 1 loss, is considered one of Australia’s premier boxers, having transitioned successfully from amateur to professional status six years ago. His career faced a setback when he missed the Tokyo Olympics due to a broken hand, a condition worsened during a 2021 victory over former NRL star Paul Gallen.

In the main event at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Tyson Fury took the opportunity to alert his rival Anthony Joshua of potential future match talks that could turn into a massive clash. While Huni’s comeback shows promise, the backdrop of promotional strife threatens to overshadow his achievements in the ring.
