A 23-year-old man has been detained in Dandenong in connection with the murder of Mohammed Keshtiar, an underworld figure, who was shot dead two years ago. Police are set to interview the suspect shortly.

The incident occurred on the night of August 4, two years ago, when Keshtiar and an associate were walking along Almeida Crescent in South Yarra. A stolen grey Toyota Prado slowed as it approached them, and a passenger opened fire, striking Keshtiar multiple times. His companion managed to flee without injury. In a chilling follow-up, a passenger exited the vehicle to fire more shots at Keshtiar, who had collapsed on the ground. Despite attempts from bystanders to assist him, Keshtiar succumbed to his injuries later at a hospital.

Assistant Commissioner Martin O’Brien described the arrest as significant, highlighting its implications for combatting organised crime in Victoria. He noted that the violent nature of the shooting posed a considerable risk to the public, which reinforced the investigation’s high priority for law enforcement over the past 20 months. O’Brien further acknowledged Keshtiar’s ties to various organised crime groups, complicating the investigation.

In a bid to solicit additional information regarding the case, authorities had previously announced a $1 million reward last September, which still stands. O’Brien reiterated the commitment to hold all those accountable for the crime and urged anyone with pertinent information to come forward.
