The Canberra Raiders secured a 26-22 victory over the Melbourne Storm on Friday evening, but coach Ricky Stuart expressed his confusion and frustration regarding the officiating, particularly the NRL Bunker’s decision-making. Despite describing his team’s performance as the best of the season, he was disheartened by the video referee’s interventions.
Early in the match, Hudson Young scored what appeared to be a try that would have given the Raiders a 12-0 lead, but it was overturned after a long review deemed an accidental offside. The disappointment continued when Zac Hosking’s late try was also disallowed due to a high tackle by Young on Storm fullback Sua Fa’alogo in the preceding play. When questioned about the ruling, Stuart candidly shared, “Negativity,” explaining that the thrill of celebrating a try has diminished due to constant scrutiny regarding potential infractions.
Stuart reflected on how last season’s controversial rulings have created a hesitance to celebrate valid tries, stating that unless there’s a clear-cut situation, such as an intercept, it’s challenging to rejoice wholeheartedly. He acknowledged the Bunker’s role in ensuring fair play but noted the emotional toll of continually second-guessing during key moments.
NRL’s head of football, Graham Annesley, had previously commented on the Bunker’s tendency to “over-adjudicate,” conceding that some recent disruptions should not have led to penalties. Additionally, Stuart highlighted differing interpretations of ruck play in the game, suggesting that officials applied a more relaxed approach, which led to a more enjoyable spectacle. He expressed a desire for consistent rulings so that coaches can adapt their strategies without uncertainty.
While praising the different ruck interpretations that contributed to a more dynamic game, he underscored the difficulties faced when rules appear to shift unexpectedly mid-season. Wayne Bennett, coach of South Sydney, echoed Stuart’s sentiments and welcomed the ruck changes, indicating they may herald a more entertaining game and steer clear of previous grappling tactics.
The Raiders, however, will likely face a setback as Josh Papalii suffered a calf injury during the match, casting doubt on his availability for their upcoming clash against the Tigers next Thursday.
