A jury is currently hearing the case against Maree Mavis Crabtree, 59, who is accused of murdering her 26-year-old son, Jonathan, by allegedly spiking his fruit smoothie with prescription painkillers on July 19, 2017. This incident purportedly occurred at their home north of the Gold Coast, just before Crabtree allegedly made a $125,000 insurance claim. The court has also heard claims that Crabtree attempted to murder Jonathan earlier that year in January.
During the proceedings at the Brisbane Supreme Court, Jonathan’s struggles with drug use were detailed, including a history of overdoses. Defence counsel suggested that Jonathan may have ingested the medication himself, whether accidentally or deliberately. Key testimony came from Rebekah Millard, who had an 18-month relationship with Jonathan beginning in 2012. Millard testified that Jonathan was prescribed tramadol but did not mention oxycodone, which a pathologist later identified as the cause of his death due to excessive levels in his system.
Amidst the emotional turmoil, evidence presented indicated that Jonathan exhibited significant mood swings and spoke of suicidal thoughts, making his mental state concerning. Millard described a duality in Jonathan’s personality, claiming he appeared cheerful around friends yet displayed a troubled demeanor when alone.
A tragic car accident in 2015 left Jonathan with lasting injuries requiring ongoing care. Maree Crabtree lived alongside Jonathan and his sister Tara. Neighbour Vicki Inglis testified that Crabtree expressed frustrations about her son, describing him as burdensome. Inglis recounted instances where Crabtree remarked on the idea of introducing drugs to Jonathan, which she found unsettling.
The trial is expected to continue for approximately four more weeks, with numerous witnesses scheduled to testify. Crown prosecutor Caroline Marco highlighted troubling comments made by Crabtree regarding the administration of drugs to Jonathan, raising further questions about the mother’s intentions. The case continues to unravel a complex and disturbing narrative surrounding Jonathan’s life and untimely death, along with Crabtree’s alleged actions leading up to the incident.
