Andrew Johns, a legend for the Blues, believes that if State of Origin teams were selected today, Kalyn Ponga would undoubtedly be the Maroons’ fullback, outpacing his competitors significantly. He suggests that if coach Billy Slater chooses Ponga, it could mean Reece Walsh would be excluded from the squad entirely.

Ponga missed the entirety of the 2023 Origin series and the initial matches of the 2024 series but was named on the bench for game three. Despite this, Johns argues that based on current form, the ideal Maroons spine should consist of Ponga, Cameron Munster, Daly Cherry-Evans, and Harry Grant. He emphasised Ponga’s exceptional performance, noting that he is currently the top player in the competition, and his impact is crucial for the Newcastle Knights’ success.

On a recent episode of Nine’s Immortal Behaviour, Johns remarked on the intimidating prowess of Ponga, stating, "without him, the Knights just don’t win." In contrast, he expressed concerns over Walsh’s recent play, particularly his tendency to force risky plays. Johns advised Walsh to temper this instinct and not chase big moments, especially in the pressure of Origin matches, where such strategies can backfire.

When questioned on whether there is still a role for Walsh in the squad, Johns firmly stated that he would prefer Ben Hunt, calling him the best reserve player in Origin history since Kurt Gidley. Meanwhile, on QLDER, Darren Lockyer urged caution regarding the selection debate so early in the season while praising Ponga’s recent form against the Dolphins. He acknowledged both players’ abilities and indicated they would be closely monitored by the coaching staff.

Wally Lewis echoed similar sentiments, appreciating Ponga’s strong start to the season but cautioned against making premature comparisons with Walsh. Overall, the focus remains on Ponga’s return and the potential reshaping of the Maroons as discussions around player selections heat up.
