Olympic silver medallist Jess Hull is set to compete in the women’s 5000 metres final at the Australian Athletics Championships, despite suffering from whiplash and bruises after a dramatic fall during the 1500m final on Friday night at Sydney Olympic Park. Hull had to withdraw from the 800m event following her fall, which involved a controversial clash with Claudia Hollingsworth, who was initially disqualified before being reinstated as the champion after an appeal.

After a light jog on Sunday morning, Hull decided to participate in the 5000m final at 1:28 PM, where she will face strong competitors including Rose Davies, Georgia Griffith, Lauren Ryan, and Linden Hall. She is scheduled to have an MRI to assess her injuries, particularly to her neck, after the incident that saw her crash into the track face-first.

Hollingsworth expressed her remorse over the incident, reflecting on the previous event’s tensions but emphasising their mutual respect and the lack of bad blood between them. She indicated her desire to reach out to ensure Hull’s well-being.

In other championship news, teen sprint sensation Gout Gout will not have a rematch against sprint champion Lachlan Kennedy in the 200m finals. Kennedy, who recently claimed the 100m title with a time of 9.96 seconds, has withdrawn from the 200m event, citing the need to prioritise his health after previously suffering a stress fracture from overexertion.

Kennedy’s team wishes to ensure he is fit for the upcoming world relay championships in Botswana next month, valuing his presence in the men’s 4x100m team. Although the 200m final is still anticipated to showcase Gout’s formidable talent, Kennedy’s absence will be felt. The final is set to commence at 1:55 PM, creating a significant void in what could have been a thrilling race between the two young stars.
