A Qantas flight en route to the United States had to return to Australia due to a serious health emergency involving a passenger. Flight QF7, which had departed from Sydney bound for Dallas, encountered the incident approximately four hours into its trip, prompting the pilots to divert near Fiji. Given the aircraft was loaded with excess fuel, landing in Fiji was not feasible, so the decision was made to head back to Sydney for the necessary medical assistance.
Once the flight turned back, the crew began dumping fuel at cruising altitude. Among those onboard was Australian Olympic diver Sam Fricker, who shared a video of the fuel release on social media. In his post, Fricker detailed the unexpected turnaround, expressing hope that the affected passenger would receive the care they needed. He remarked on the situation, noting the sadness of seeing fuel being dumped over the ocean, especially during a time when fuel prices were impacted by the ongoing conflict in Iran.
After the health emergency was managed, the flight was rescheduled, and a new crew took the passengers back to Dallas, leaving Sydney later in the evening. Qantas reiterated its commitment to passenger safety and thanked those aboard for their understanding during the unforeseen disruption.
