Tim Tszyu has openly acknowledged facing significant challenges before his upcoming fight against Albanian Denis Nurja on Easter Sunday in Wollongong. Reflecting on his recent performances, Tszyu admitted to “falling apart” but is now regaining focus and determination, aiming to return to the pinnacle of the boxing world. The Sydney boxer, who recently secured a unanimous decision victory over Anthony Velazquez in August, has had a mixed record of 2-3 in his last five bouts, coinciding with a tough period in the US where he suffered losses to Sebastian Fundora and Bakhram Murtazaliev.

At the press conference for the fight, Tszyu was forthright about his struggles and noted that opponents might scrutinise his fight against Murtazaliev for weaknesses. He said, “As much as he’s practising his left hook, don’t worry, my right hand is here,” indicating his readiness to counter any strategies they may develop based on that performance.

Currently, Tszyu holds the No. 7 spot with the WBC, No. 8 with the IBF, and No. 3 with the WBO, showing his prominence in the boxing rankings. He plans to introduce new tactics in his fight with Nurja, who has largely fought less experienced competition. Tszyu expressed a desire to enhance his style and display his natural talent and skills developed over the years. “I want to bring out something new, something different,” he stated, indicating his objective to stay active and enjoy the sport.

Tszyu remains unfazed by criticism from former champions claiming his best days might be behind him, especially with a significant showdown against Errol Spence on the horizon. He emphasised the inevitability of such opinions in the sport but remained confident in his abilities, stating, “I’m not there to prove to anyone.”

Anticipating the bout, Tszyu looks forward to thrilling encounters, eager to unleash his passion and competitiveness in the ring against another undefeated opponent. “When you put passion and love into something and put it into action, amazing things happen,” he stated, underscoring his commitment to reclaiming his status. With a renewed sense of purpose, Tszyu is set to make a meaningful statement on Sunday.
