On a recent morning, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reinforced Australia’s unwavering support for Ukraine amid ongoing conflict. Although he refrained from addressing comments made by former US President Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance, Albanese articulated Australia’s position firmly, declaring, “We stand with Ukraine.”
Over the past three years, a land war has unfolded in Europe, with the people of Ukraine battling not just for their sovereignty but also for the principles of international law. Albanese emphasised that Australia would continue its support for Ukraine for as long as necessary, highlighting the struggle between a democratic nation and an authoritarian regime under Vladimir Putin, who harbours ambitions that extend beyond Ukraine.
Albanese expressed a desire for peace in Ukraine, reaffirming that it aligns with the wishes of the Ukrainian populace. He outlined a straightforward solution for achieving peace, which involves Russia ceasing its illegal invasion and attacks on civilians. He condemned Russia’s aggression, noting the prolonged violence that has persisted for three years.
The Prime Minister referenced the unique nature of Trump’s interactions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggesting that Trump’s behaviour during Zelenskyy’s visit led to a significant deterioration in relations between the US and Ukraine. Trump had even threatened to abandon support for the nation entirely, which was reflected in a hastily cancelled news conference and signing ceremony for a minerals agreement between the US and Ukraine that followed his demand for Zelenskyy to leave.
Reiterating Australia’s commitment, Albanese stated that the government will uphold the country’s national interests, aligning them with Ukraine’s plight. He labelled Russia as a bully, aiming to invade and annex territory from Ukraine. Standing firm for Australia’s interests, Albanese concluded that supporting the international rule of law is crucial, reflecting the broader struggle the people of Ukraine are engaged in.
