Australian cricket coach Andrew McDonald has indicated that Steve Smith could continue playing Test cricket for “as long as possible” following his impressive recent performances. At the beginning of the home series against India, the 35-year-old faced scrutiny over his position in the team due to a slump in form. However, Smith’s remarkable resurgence, marked by two centuries against India and two more against Sri Lanka, has solidified his place in the squad.

As he played a pivotal role in Australia’s 2-0 series victory in Galle while stepping in for captain Pat Cummins, attention now shifts to the World Test Championship final and the forthcoming Ashes series, which may be significant for both Smith and fellow veteran Usman Khawaja. McDonald has clarified that there will be no imposed timeframe on Smith’s career decisions, allowing him to evaluate his performance after each series.

Recognising Smith’s esteemed career and current form, McDonald expressed hope that the talented batsman will remain a part of the team for the foreseeable future. The next challenge for Smith will be to lead the Australian team in the Champions Trophy tournament, marking its return after a six-year hiatus, while several key players are set to miss out on participation.
