A series of thefts targeting collectible stores in Melbourne has resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of dollars worth of Pokémon cards. Recently, thieves struck in Thomastown, Moonee Ponds, and Eumemmering, using crowbars to breach locked stores and filling wheelie bins with items. Despite alarms ringing, CCTV footage showed the culprits unfazed as they cleared shelves and loaded their getaway cars.
Store owner Jason Zhe reflected on the frightening experience, feeling targeted as the thieves seemed to have monitored his routine. He noted their meticulous planning, while Umit Berkant from Blacklist Cards expressed the devastating impact on small businesses, lamenting the lack of empathy from the criminals.
Collectively, the affected stores have suffered significant losses, with some cards valued up to $600 each. In light of the situation, police are actively searching for the thieves, while store owners collaborate to make it more difficult for the stolen cards to be sold. Berkant remarked on the heightened vigilance among local businesses, suggesting that a breakthrough could occur as the community unites against such criminal activities.
