Recent research by the NRMA has revealed a concerning trend, with nearly one in four Australians admitting to experiencing a microsleep while driving. The nationwide survey polled over 2000 individuals and found that 23% had fallen asleep at the wheel, predominantly during daylight hours, accounting for almost two-thirds of these incidents. This alarming statistic is underscored by Australia’s rising road toll, which reached 1337 fatalities over the past year—a 4.8% increase compared to the previous year, according to data from the National Road Safety Data Hub.

The survey also highlighted that around 40% of drivers fail to take regular breaks during long journeys of three hours or more. Many respondents expressed a primary concern for avoiding traffic, with 61% prioritising this over safety, and nearly a quarter opting to drive before dawn.

NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury emphasised the severity of the situation, stating that fatigue contributes to one in five road crashes in Australia. He urged drivers to recognise the importance of rest, highlighting that many lives could be saved simply by taking necessary breaks during their journeys.

As Australians prepare for winter getaways, with nearly 70% planning domestic holidays and 45% intending to drive interstate, Khoury stressed the increased need for safety awareness. He pointed out that as more people travel long distances—often on unfamiliar roads—it is crucial for drivers to stop every two hours to mitigate fatigue-related risks.

In light of these findings, the NRMA is advocating for greater attention to road safety, particularly as the holiday season approaches. Ensuring adequate rest for drivers is vital in reducing fatigue-related accidents and enhancing overall road safety for all Australians.
