Ratepayers in the Gold Coast may soon face a new financial obligation as the local council debates the introduction of a levy in response to the damages wrought by Cyclone Alfred. In a bid to recover these costs, the Gold Coast City Council is contemplating a “disaster management response and recovery” charge that would appear on ratepayer bills.
Mayor Tom Tate emphasised the necessity of establishing a reserve for efficient clean-up activities, noting that expenses for essential services like skip bin hires add to the financial burden. Plans are in place to bolster the resilience of Gold Coast beaches against future severe weather, yet the available funds for disaster recovery are reportedly diminishing.
The council is expected to vote on the specifics of the proposed levy shortly, with deliberations set for Friday. While federal assistance is anticipated to aid in recovery efforts, the exact level of government support remains uncertain. Tate pointed out that as additional costs arise, such as necessary upgrades to infrastructure, the financial demands are increasing.
