A 21-year-old volunteer group leader has been charged with multiple offences, including the alleged theft of children’s underwear from tents at a campground on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. The alleged incidents took place in Landsborough and reportedly date back to 2022, as stated by Queensland Police.
The investigation was prompted by a report received in December 2024, detailing a man suspected of peering into bathrooms used by children during an event. Subsequent inquiries revealed that the individual had reportedly looked into these facilities on several occasions since 2022.
In addition to the bathroom incidents, the accused is alleged to have entered tents to steal children’s underwear multiple times throughout 2023 and 2024. On May 5, detectives from the Child Protection Investigation Unit executed a search warrant at a residence in Caboolture, where they confiscated various electronic devices and children’s clothing.
The young man, a resident of Caboolture South, faces serious charges, including 17 counts of unlawful entry, five counts related to the mistreatment of children under 16, five counts of unlawful stalking, and one count of privacy breaches. He is due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on June 16.
Police allege that the accused exploited his position as a volunteer to gain access to children, now aged between 13 and 16, and committed numerous offences against them. Officer in Charge Grant Gleeson from the Child Protection Investigation Unit expressed concerns there may be additional victims who have yet to come forward. He urged anyone with information related to this case or similar experiences to contact the authorities.
Gleeson emphasised the importance of reporting, stating, “It is not your fault and you are not alone; there are various reporting and support options available.” For further assistance, victims or witnesses are encouraged to reach out to support services, including Kids Helpline at 1800 55 1800 and the National Sexual Assault, Domestic and Family Violence Counselling Service at 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732).
