Old technology gadgets might be an excellent avenue for generating revenue and cutting costs, according to experts in the field. In Australia, there has been a noticeable shift towards refurbished tech as many seek to alleviate the pressures of the rising cost of living. This trend has fostered a thriving market for second-hand devices, particularly smartphones and tablets.

Tech Guide’s Stephen French highlights the emergence of a robust ecosystem surrounding refurbished products, noting that many older devices retain their value surprisingly well. In response to this growing demand, major retailers—such as JB Hi-Fi, the Good Guys, and Officeworks—are simplifying trade-in processes. These retailers offer online assessments for a variety of electronics, including phones, laptops, smartwatches, and gaming consoles, allowing customers to send in their outdated devices at no cost.

Brisbane resident Brittany Rogerson shared her perspective, stating that using established retailers for selling old gadgets is preferable to individual sales via platforms like Facebook Marketplace, which she finds rife with scams and uncomfortable in-person meetings. While Rogerson’s approach prioritises safety and convenience, tech expert Fenech advises that selling directly to other consumers could yield higher financial returns. He explains that while trading through a store guarantees a smoother experience, it often offers lower payouts compared to private sales.

Notably, devices that may not be in prime condition can also be accepted for recycling or refurbishment, further contributing to the sustainability of tech consumption.

In summary, whether for financial gain or cost-saving measures, tapping into the refurbished tech market presents a valuable opportunity for Australians navigating economic challenges.
