Authorities are on high alert following alarming footage shared on Facebook, revealing the presence of a red-tailed boa constrictor in Sydney’s south. The snake was last seen near a boat ramp at Tom Ugly’s Bridge in Sylvania on Sunday, prompting concerns for the local wildlife. It is suspected that the snake is an escaped pet.

Reports of the boa have reached the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI), which is coordinating the response. A spokesperson stated that they were informed about the sighting and urged the community to report any potential encounters with the snake. Residents are advised to avoid approaching the reptile and, if safe, to take a photograph to assist in identification efforts.

Native to Brazil, boa constrictors are generally non-aggressive; however, given their exotic nature and the unusual circumstances, caution is warranted. Individuals who spot the snake should immediately inform the Sutherland Shire Council rather than attempting to handle the situation themselves. The call for public vigilance highlights the importance of ensuring community safety and protecting local wildlife during this unsettling event.
