In Western Australia, every driver will benefit from a $100 fuel support payment as part of the state budget for 2026-27, aimed at alleviating cost-of-living pressures. This initiative was announced by Treasurer Rita Saffioti during her third budget presentation, which also prioritises funding for housing, healthcare, and education.

Saffioti reported that the state has achieved its eighth consecutive operating surplus, amounting to $3.5 billion for the current year, with expectations of $2.4 billion next year. Despite the positive financial outlook, net debt is predicted to reach $34.5 billion by June 30 due to significant infrastructure investments; however, Western Australia maintains the lowest debt burden in the country.

From July 1, over 2.1 million residents will be able to access the Service WA app to claim their fuel support payment. To qualify, drivers must enter their licence details and bank information. Saffioti assured that this payment would provide essential financial relief directly to Western Australian motorists.

Additionally, parents will continue receiving student assistance payments of $150 for each primary school or kindergarten child and $250 for secondary students, with payments expected to commence in the third term of this year. The government has allocated $4.7 billion for housing initiatives, including a raise in the stamp duty exemption threshold from $500,000 to $600,000, particularly benefiting younger West Australians.

However, residents should prepare for increases in utility costs, including an estimated rise of over $50 for electricity and water, in addition to an extra $35 for car running expenses. Saffioti noted that international events, like conflicts in the Middle East, have impacted the state’s economy, leading to a budget presented during an era of considerable economic uncertainty.

She articulated that the current economic landscape has shifted significantly, revealing unforeseen vulnerabilities. The government’s responsibility is to protect households and the domestic economy from these rapid global changes.
