Tragic events unfolded off the northern New South Wales coast, where three individuals lost their lives following a distress call regarding a yacht in trouble. The emergency services were alerted around 6:15 pm about the vessel’s difficulties near the South Ballina break wall.

In response, the Marine Rescue NSW team attempted to assist; however, their rescue boat capsized while navigating through challenging conditions at the Ballina bar. This incident is believed to have led to the sinking of the yacht itself. Authorities reported that while three people tragically died, four others managed to reach the safety of the shore, although the exact number of individuals originally aboard the yacht remains unknown.

On the scene, water police and local officers are collaborating with the Marine Area Command to organise ongoing search efforts, supported by the AMSAR Challenger jet and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter based in Lismore. Paramedics attended to the four survivors, with reports indicating that they did not suffer life-threatening injuries. As investigations continue, the situation reflects the maritime hazards in the area, and a thorough inquiry is anticipated to understand the circumstances better.
