Southern Australia is bracing for a shift in weather as rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms are predicted to sweep across the region by the end of the week, marking a departure from the recent warm and dry spell. This change is being driven by a low-pressure system that is moving a cold front and trough from the west to the east, commencing today.

As the front progresses, showers and thunderstorms are expected to cover southern areas, with the strongest impacts felt in southern Western Australia first, followed by South Australia tomorrow. Over the weekend, states including Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory will also experience increased rainfall.

The anticipated precipitation will vary in intensity, with some regions forecasting between 10 to 20mm of rain, while isolated areas, particularly where thunderstorms occur, could see totals exceeding 40mm. In advance of the cold front, winds are likely to intensify, changing from strengthening northerlies to cooler westerlies and south-westerlies as the front passes.

Warnings are in place for potential damaging gusts, particularly in parts of South Australia and western Victoria on Saturday, with this risk extending to elevated regions of eastern Victoria and south-east New South Wales by Sunday.

In terms of temperature, many areas are expected to witness a drop of 5 to 10 degrees Celsius as the system advances. For instance, Adelaide’s temperature is projected to decrease from the high 20s earlier in the week to around 19 degrees by Sunday and Monday. Melbourne’s highs will similarly slide from about 26 degrees on Friday down to 22 degrees by Sunday, while Hobart will see a drop from the mid-20s to approximately 19 degrees by Monday. Canberra is also set for a cooling trend, with temperatures dipping from the low 20s over the weekend to around 17 degrees by Tuesday.

This significant weather change will undoubtedly affect outdoor plans, urging residents to stay informed and prepared as conditions develop.
