In an event marked by protest, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese faced interruptions from activists during his speech at the Chamber of Minerals and Energy breakfast in Perth this morning. Before the Prime Minister could address the audience at the Westin Hotel, three protesters staged a disruption on stage, vocally opposing the expansion of a significant oil project in Western Australia.
The activists, swiftly removed by security personnel, were identified as members of the group Disrupt Burrup Hub. They are actively campaigning against the proposed expansion of Woodside’s Burrup Hub in Karratha. Among the protesters was an 18-year-old named Will, who shouted slogans such as “Disrupt Burrup Hub!” and “Block Browse!” before being escorted off the stage.
A 19-year-old female activist also took part in the protest, accusing Woodside of “ecocide,” which refers to the destruction of the natural environment as a result of human activity. Following the incident, Disrupt Burrup Hub confirmed that the protesters were issued move-on notices and removed from the venue.
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding the environmental impacts of fossil fuel projects in Australia, as activists continue to challenge the government’s energy policies and corporate activities.
