The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has officially announced its decision to exit the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the broader OPEC+ alliance, effective May 1. This decision has been anticipated for a while, stemming from the UAE’s dissatisfaction with production constraints imposed by OPEC and growing tensions with Saudi Arabia.

The UAE has been a member of OPEC since its establishment in 1967 through Abu Dhabi, and later as an independent nation in 1971. However, its foreign policy has increasingly diverged from that of Riyadh, especially as Saudi Arabia intensified its drive to attract foreign investments under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s leadership. This shift has contributed to a competitive dynamic between the two nations, particularly regarding economic initiatives and regional political influence, notably in the Red Sea region.

The announcement, made through the UAE’s state-run WAM agency, highlighted the UAE’s commitment to a strategic and responsible role in global energy markets. The UAE indicated that its departure from OPEC is part of a broader vision aimed at boosting domestic energy production while responding to market demand. The nation pledged to manage its production levels in a measured way following the exit.

OPEC has faced challenges in maintaining its market power, particularly with the surge in crude oil production from the United States in recent years. Saudi Arabia has traditionally held significant influence within OPEC, but the dynamics are shifting with the UAE’s intentions to assert its independence in energy markets.

Relations between the UAE and Saudi Arabia have been under strain, particularly following the breakdown of their coalition against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The rift became apparent last December after Saudi airstrikes targeted what it claimed were weapons shipments intended for UAE-backed separatists in Yemen. Additionally, tensions escalated as several Saudi broadcasting entities, previously based in Dubai, relocated back to Saudi Arabia.

In summary, the UAE’s withdrawal from OPEC marks a significant turn in its energy strategy and regional dynamics, as it seeks to enhance its autonomy in the competitive landscape of Middle Eastern politics and energy production.
